IOC rejects extra Winter Games spot for skeleton's Uhlaender
""circumvented the Olympic qualification principles""
""undermined fair competition.""
""warranted in this moment given the exceptional circumstances [...] that resulted in significant reputational harm to the sport across the world.""
""Specifically, allegations that another national federation delayed withdrawing four of its women's skeleton athletes from the competition until they could not be replaced with other competitors,""
The IOC declined the USOPC request to grant Katie Uhlaender a discretionary place at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games. Uhlaender, a two-time world champion, said she was unfairly denied the chance to reach her sixth Olympics after a Lake Placid qualifying event. Uhlaender accused Canada's skeleton coach, Joe Cecchini, of pulling female racers from the event to deny athletes vital qualifying points. The USOPC alleged Cecchini's actions "circumvented the Olympic qualification principles" and "undermined fair competition," and requested an amendment to the qualification system. The IOC chose to recognize the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation's investigation outcome.
