"MEXICO CITY, Mexico -- Officials said a train accident in southern Mexico killed at least 13 people and injured dozens, halting traffic along a rail line connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico. The Interoceanic Train linking the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz went off the rails Sunday as it passed a curve near the town of Nizanda."

Officials reported 241 passengers and nine crew members were on board when the train went off the rails rounding a curve. President Claudia Sheinbaum said the Mexican Navy confirmed the deaths and that she sent navy and Interior Ministry human rights officials to assist families. Oaxaca state agencies reached the site to aid the injured. The Interoceanic Train opened in 2023 and runs about 180 miles from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos as part of plans to develop the Tehuantepec isthmus into a strategic trade corridor connecting the Atlantic and Pacific.
