India's parliament bans vast online gambling industry
Briefly

Parliament has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, banning online gambling and criminalising the offering, promotion and financing of such games with penalties up to five years imprisonment. Government figures cited $2.3bn stripped annually from 450 million people by gaming companies, and the law targets card games, poker and fantasy sports, including fantasy cricket apps. Dream11 suspended cash games and contests after the bill passed, and its lead-sponsorship of the national cricket team is now uncertain. The bill awaits presidential ratification, carves out exceptions for e-sports and educational games, and aims to curb addiction and financial harm.
