"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.Your support makes all the difference."
"Police in India claim to have lost a wedding ring belonging to jailed Brition Jagatar Singh Johal, who has now spent eight years behind bars over terror allegations. Johal, a 38-year-old Dumbarton-based campaigner for Sikh rights, was detained in India's Punjab state eight years ago on Tuesday in 2017 just weeks after his wedding, over accusations of involvement with the banned Sikh separatist Khalistani Liberation Force."
The Independent covers reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech while soliciting donations to fund reporters and avoid paywalls. Jagatar Singh Johal, a 38-year-old Dumbarton-based Sikh rights campaigner, was detained in Punjab, India, in 2017 weeks after his wedding on accusations of involvement with the banned Khalistani Liberation Force. He has spent eight years in custody, was acquitted earlier this year on one charge, but still faces eight other federal charges that supporters call duplicate and weak. A UN panel found his detention arbitrary in May 2022. His family alleges torture, including electric shocks and forced signing of a blank document used as a confession. The Indian government denies mistreatment and police say they lost his wedding ring.
