In show of support, France and Canada open consulates in Greenland
"This is a very important day for us as a country, because we're opening our consulate here in Nuuk, Greenland,"
"It's a victory for Greenlanders to see two allies opening diplomatic representations in Nuuk,"
"There is great appreciation for the support against what Trump has said."
"The first item on the agenda will be to listen to Greenlanders, to hear them, to let them explain in detail their position, and from our side "
France and Canada opened consulates in Nuuk to show support for Greenland and reinforce the island's autonomy. The openings followed US President Donald Trump's insistence that Washington needs control of Greenland for security and mineral reasons and earlier threats to seize the island. Trump backed off seizure threats after striking a "framework" deal with NATO chief Mark Rutte to secure greater US influence. A US-Denmark-Greenland working group has been established to address Washington's Arctic security concerns. Denmark and Greenland insist that sovereignty and territorial integrity remain a "red line." Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand hoisted the Canadian flag amid applause from a 76-person Inuit delegation, and France appointed Jean-Noel Poirier as consul with a priority to listen to Greenlanders.
