In Greenland, US-NATO deal met with relief, mistrust
"I'm not quite sure that it's a deal... from our perspective, it's just Donald Trump being Donald Trump."
"to show our strong support for Greenland's people at a difficult time."
"she emphasized that defense and security in the Arctic are a matter for NATO as a whole."
Angry residents protested outside the US consulate in Nuuk over US President Donald Trump’s apparent interest in annexing or buying Greenland, creating initial unrest followed by cautious calm. A Davos announcement of a supposed "deal" produced relief for some but widespread skepticism because of limited concrete action and the exclusion of Greenland’s government from early discussions. Denmark’s prime minister traveled to Greenland to show support and to coordinate next steps with the semiautonomous government. Greenland’s leadership welcomed the absence of immediate military threats and insisted that no agreements about the territory can proceed without Greenland’s involvement. Copenhagen signaled that talks with the US will begin and framed Arctic defense as a NATO responsibility.
