Ilia Malinin suffers stunning stumble, finishes eighth in figure skating at Olympics
"I blew it,"
"There's no way that just happened. I had been preparing the whole season. I felt so confident with my program. ... I have no words, honestly."
"Olympic nerves."
Ilia Malinin popped the quad axel, stumbled across the ice and plummeted from near certain victory to eighth place in the men's free skate. He covered his anguished face after the music ended and experienced his first loss since November 2023. Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan won the Olympic men's figure skating gold, the country's first in the sport. Japan's Yuma Kagiyama recovered from several falls to take second. U.S. skaters included Andrew Torgashev, 12th with a season-best 259.06, and Maxim Naumov, 20th with 223.36, who received a standing ovation from Jeff Goldblum. The Milano Ice Skating Arena was packed for the event.
