ICC opens hearing for Philippines ex-president Duterte
"For some, killing reached the level of a perverse form of competition,"
"authorized murders and personally selected some of the victims,"
"He maintains his innocence absolutely."
"We have waited for this for so long, for years we have waited, but we did not relent,"
Pretrial hearings at the International Criminal Court began in The Hague for former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on three counts of crimes against humanity related to dozens of alleged extrajudicial killings during his time as mayor of Davao City and as national president. Prosecutors allege Duterte played a pivotal role in extrajudicial killings, using fear and financial incentives to encourage armed death squads and fostering a competitive atmosphere for killings. The indictment accuses involvement in at least 78 murders and alleges he authorized murders and personally selected some victims. Duterte was arrested in Manila, transferred to the Netherlands, held at Scheveningen Prison, and maintains his innocence. Demonstrators gathered outside court, and judges have 60 days to decide whether to proceed to trial.
