""Last night I had the pleasure of speaking to Gena Heraty. I am relieved and inspired after my conversation with her," Mr Harris said in a statement."
""Gena's courage and commitment are boundless. She is someone of extraordinary bravery, unwavering commitment to peace, and decades of dedication to Haiti's most vulnerable.""
""She asked me to tell people to pray for Haiti and for peace. I am so glad that brighter days lie ahead for her and her family.""
""We are relieved beyond words. We are so deeply grateful to everyone, in Haiti and internationally, who has worked tirelessly over these terrible weeks to help secure their safe return. In particular we would like to acknowledge the support of An Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and his team at the Department of Foreign Affairs, including Geraldine Byrne Nason, ambassador of Ireland to the United States of America. The global outpouring of concern, love, prayers and solidarity shown for Gena and to us by friends, neighbours, communities, colleagues and indeed those with no connection to us at all has been a huge source of comfort and support.""
Gena Heraty, a Westport, Co Mayo woman who oversees the Sainte-Helene orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti, was abducted along with seven others, including a three-year-old child. The group was held in captivity for a month and released last Friday. Ms Heraty spoke by phone with An Tánaiste Simon Harris, who praised her courage and urged people to pray for Haiti and peace. Her family expressed deep relief and gratitude to Irish officials, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason, and to international supporters. The family's priority remains her recovery from the traumatic ordeal and hope for peace in Haiti.
