'I am here, but my heart and soul is there' - Doctor evacuated to Dublin says Gaza has been destroyed by conflict
"I have been in Ireland since Friday, it is very difficult to wake up without the sound of the drones, shelling and bombing. I have friends, colleagues, family members there that I know are still suffering and they want to be evacuated, but it is difficult. I am here, but my heart and soul is there."
"At one point, I can say [our family] had acute hunger in our faces. When you find a piece of bread at that time, it was a kind of luxury. The cost of one bread is five euros, I could still afford it because I was still working. But imagine the population, 80pc of the population are in poverty. Children are crying in their tents because their families can't provide them milk."
Gaza's healthcare system and infrastructure have been devastated; 92% of primary roads are destroyed or damaged and communications are seriously impaired. Hospitals in the north are collapsing, with patients lying on floors, facilities operating without electricity, and clinicians forced to consult without being able to provide treatment. Widespread poverty affects roughly 80% of the population, driving acute hunger and making basic food unaffordable for many families; children lack milk and cry in tents. Evacuation routes require travel through active conflict zones; coordinated embassy and humanitarian pickups facilitate departures but leave many relatives and colleagues still unable to leave.
