"I am overwhelmed by the situation,"
"It's not going to be an easy road, Jamaica,"
"That was hell. All night long, it was terrible,"
Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a catastrophic Category 5 storm with top winds of 297 km/h. Authorities reported massive evacuations and sheltering across Cuba, with about 735,000 people in shelters in eastern Cuba and widespread roof and house damage concentrated in the south west and north west. Jamaica experienced severe damage, with more than 25,000 people in shelters, 77% of the island without power, blocked mountain roads, collapsed houses and at least one reported death. In Haiti, flooding from the La Digue river burst killed about 25 people in Petit-Goave, collapsed dozens of homes, and left residents trapped amid limited official response.
