"All these states don't want Hamas to continue to be active. They want disarmament and in this respect we have a good pressure scenario, because it won't work without pressure," Minister Johann Wadephul told Deutschlandfunk radio."

Qatar, Egypt, Turkey and other Arab states are exerting pressure on militant group Hamas in Gaza to disarm to support further peace negotiations with Israel. Those states do not want Hamas to continue to be active and are pushing for disarmament as a prerequisite for talks. A coordinated pressure scenario is viewed as necessary because disarmament will not occur without sustained pressure. Regional diplomatic efforts are being used to leverage Hamas's behavior and create conditions conducive to advancing negotiations between Palestinian factions and Israel. The strategy centers on demilitarization as a condition for meaningful progress toward peace.
