Haiti's Winter Olympics kit redesigned at last minute to fit IOC guidelines
"No kind of demonstration or political, religious, or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."
"The uniforms are not just an exercise of style but an exercise of responsibility, Jean said."
"We had to concentrate positive messages about Haiti, our art, culture and history, within a few metres [of fabric]."
Designer Stella Jean based the Haitian 2026 Winter Olympics ski suits on a 2006 Edouard Duval-Carrie painting featuring Toussaint Louverture. The IOC guidelines prohibit demonstrations and political, religious, or racial propaganda in Olympic venues, a rule that prompted a redesign. Italian artisans hand-painted the uniforms onto technical sports fabric and delivered them the night before the opening ceremony. Jean concentrated positive messages about Haiti, its art, culture and history within limited fabric space. Rather than abandon the concept, Jean removed Louverture from the imagery, leaving a riderless horse and bright blue sky, and secured IOC approval for the revised design.
