The United States threatens tariffs on countries that do not support American control of Greenland, citing national security, and has pushed for US control of the self-governing Danish territory for months. Proposing tariffs represents a newly suggested tactic to secure the island. A bipartisan group of US senators traveled to Copenhagen to counteract the threats. European militaries and reconnaissance teams have begun deploying to Greenland. Italy declined participation in the Danish-led reconnaissance mission, and the Italian defense minister publicly mocked the initiative and questioned the purpose and size of participating contingents.
