French Cyclist's Journey Ends In Russian Jail, Achingly Short Of 13,000-Km Goal
"An appeal against the court decision to take him into custody has already been filed with the Primorsky regional court,"
"tried to cross the border on foot at a checkpoint only accessible for Russian and Chinese citizens."
"Then he went to another crossing, where it is forbidden to cross on a bike, you need to go on train or bus,"
Sofiane Sehili, a 44-year-old French cyclist and filmmaker, was arrested in early September in Russia's Far East while attempting to break the Lisbon to Vladivostok speed record. He was detained after crossing the Russian border from China and sent to pretrial detention in Ussuriysk, Primorsky region, with custody set until at least October 4. Authorities charged him with illegally crossing the Russian state border, punishable by a fine, compulsory labor, or up to two years in prison. His lawyer filed an appeal seeking milder restrictions such as house arrest. A monitor said he had a Russian e-visa but used restricted checkpoints and crossings that prohibit bicycles.
