Khaleda Zia died at the age of 80 following a prolonged illness, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party announced. She served as the first female prime minister of Bangladesh and was the second female prime minister in the Muslim world. Zia was later imprisoned by her political rival, Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina governed Bangladesh for more than a decade before being ousted by a student-led uprising in 2024. Zia had declared plans to run in the scheduled Bangladeshi elections in February 2026 prior to her death.
