'For the first time I got a small sense of what it's like to be Palestinian' - Tadhg Hickey on 'damn scary' flotilla drone attack
"I felt for the first time in my life I got a small sense of what it feels like to be a Palestinian, where there's bombs and drones and violence over your head and no-one is coming to help...The drone attack lasted three hours. It was a mix of flash bang devices and sulphur chemical attacks. They were targeting the sails of the smaller boats,"
"The drone attack lasted three hours. It was a mix of flash bang devices and sulphur chemical attacks. They were targeting the sails of the smaller boats, I would imagine they were trying to get one of the smaller boats to capsize or put them out of commission. For someone to be mildly injured, to make the whole flotilla decide that it's safer to go back and decommission the whole mission."
More than 50 boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla sailed from Spain on August 31 toward Gaza to attempt to break Israel's blockade and deliver supplies. Hundreds of activists, including Greta Thunberg and Cork activist Tadhg Hickey, are aboard. Eleven flotilla boats were targeted in a recent incident that included drone attacks. The boat Alma experienced a three-hour drone assault off Greece and suffered a prior drone-related fire off Tunisia. Attacks involved flash-bang devices and sulphur chemical agents aimed at sails to disable smaller vessels. The flotilla carries baby formula, biscuits, medical supplies and other humanitarian goods.
