"The number of Jewish Holocaust survivors alive worldwide has fallen to around 196,600, according to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference). That's down 220,000 survivors from a year ago - an 11% drop, the Claims Conference said. The median age of survivors is now 87, with many now in their 90s and older, numbers show. Nearly all Jewish Holocaust survivors (97%) are "child survivors" who were born in 1928 or later."
"The latest data comes nearly a year after the Claims Conference released a report called "Vanishing Witnesses"that estimated around 70% of the world's Holocaust survivors will be gone in the next 10 years. "This report is a stark reminder that our time is almost up. Our survivors are leaving us, and this is the moment to hear their voices," Claims Conference president Gideon Taylor said in April."
Approximately 196,600 Jewish Holocaust survivors remain worldwide, a decline of about 220,000 (11%) from the previous year. The median survivor age is 87, with many in their 90s or older. Nearly all survivors (97%) are child survivors born in 1928 or later. Nearly half live in Israel, about one in six live in the United States, and roughly 11% reside in former Soviet Union countries. Women constitute 62% of survivors. The Claims Conference estimates about 70% of survivors will be gone within ten years. Advocates are urgently recording testimonies and countering rising antisemitic misinformation and incidents.
