Facebook and Instagram's message as social media giants prepare to boot teens
"From December 4, Meta will begin blocking access to established Instagram, Threads and Facebook accounts for teens aged under 16, and stop the creation of new ones. "We'll begin sending notifications today to give those affected a heads-up that they will soon lose access, and will have 14 days to download their memories or delete their account," Meta said on Thursday. "They can also update their contact information so we can get in touch and help them regain access once they turn 16.""
"Meta said it has systems in place to ensure ongoing compliance, including requiring age verification if someone tries to change their birth date to someone who is over 16. Online gaming and standalone messaging apps are among services that are excluded under the legislation, with teens able to retain access to Facebook Messenger. Discord, Steam, YouTube Kids, Lego Play and WhatsApp are not subject to age restrictions."
Australia's minimum-age law will block children under 16 from using major social platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Kick and Reddit from December 10. Meta will deactivate an estimated 1.5 million profiles and begin notifying affected users from December 4, giving them 14 days to download data or delete accounts. Users can update contact information for account restoration when they turn 16. Reported monthly users aged 13-15 include about 440,000 on Snapchat, 350,000 on Instagram, 325,000 on YouTube and 200,000 on TikTok. Companies face fines up to $49.5 million for noncompliance. Some services and games are excluded.
