Dubai Invitational disaster for Shane Lowry as double bogey on 18th costs him victory
"The Offaly man (38) looked poised to hold off the Spaniard and a charging Rory McIlroy when he birdied the 13th and made a 25-footer at the 15th to take a one-shot lead over Elvira, clubhouse leader Hillier and McIlroy to the water-strewn 18th on 10-under. McIlroy needed a birdie to tie but made bogey instead to slip back to eight under and as Elvira birdied the 17th to join Lowry in the lead, the Irish star came unstuck with a series of errors."
"But he couldn't find another birdie coming home and after driving into the rough at the last, he found the same bunker that cost Lowry the title and took three to get down. Elvira was thrilled to claim his third DP World Tour title. "It means the word," Elvira said. "It's a dream come true having the family here." McIlroy was disappointed not to give himself a chance to birdie the last but he was upbeat about next week's Hero Dubai Desert Classic,"
Elvira shot 69 to win the DP World Tour title by one shot over Hillier. The Offaly man briefly led after birdies at the 13th and 15th but bogeyed and then double-bogeyed the 18th after finding sand and water, finishing tied for third on eight under. McIlroy rallied with five consecutive birdies from the ninth to share the lead but failed to birdie the closing holes and also finished on eight under. Hillier shot 65 to finish one behind. Elvira celebrated his third DP World Tour title and said, "It's a dream come true having the family here."
