
The Department of Justice unsealed a superseding indictment charging former Cuban President Raul Castro and five other members of the Castro regime with shooting down two unarmed U.S. rescue flights in 1996. The indictment was announced by the DOJ after a press conference in Miami at the Freedom Tower. The Trump administration has escalated rhetoric against Cuba’s communist government, including Castro, Miguel Diaz-Canel, and other regime leaders. Raul Castro led Cuba after Fidel Castro became ill and transferred power to Diaz-Canel in 2021. Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted a Spanish video message with English subtitles criticizing the regime and GAESA, a military-run conglomerate controlling much of Cuba’s infrastructure and economy. The Cuban government has vowed readiness to defend against any U.S. attacks.
