"It's our own fault. We made mistakes in the race but it's how it goes. The event has pushed on so much. We've learned so much from it. I know it's not the time to learn something but for next year, going into Europeans, we are the defending champions so we want to put our best foot forward then. We'll be back."
"Today was not a good day, but that's how it goes. I'm happy it wasn't a good day because next time I'll come back and not much worse can happen."
"I guess you can't have an off day at a World Championships and that's clearly what we had."
The Irish mixed 4x400m team of Jack Raftery, Sophie Becker, Conor Kelly and Sharlene Mawdsley finished sixth in 3:13.59, 3.6 seconds adrift of the national record set to win gold in Rome last year. Mawdsley described the performance as an off day with race mistakes and said the team has learned lessons ahead of next year’s Europeans, where they are defending champions. Raftery opened strongly, Becker faded possibly due to an injury-hit year, Kelly produced a solid third leg, and Mawdsley anchored well but could not recover enough to advance. Kelly and Raftery ended their championships, while Becker and Mawdsley will contest the women's 400m heats the following day.
