"In true territory spirit, neighbours are coming out with chainsaws and everyone's chipping in," the regional premier said amid clean up efforts."
Cyclone Fina intensified off the Northern Territory coast and became a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone before passing Darwin and the Tiwi Islands. Strong winds uprooted trees, toppled traffic lights, submerged roads and damaged property across Darwin, leaving about 19,000 residents without electricity. Emergency and cleanup efforts began immediately, with neighbours assisting and authorities working to restore power. Part of the Royal Darwin Hospital roof reportedly collapsed and the Darwin International Airport reopened after a brief closure. No injuries were reported and regional leaders emphasized community preparedness and unity in response.
