A judge granted him house arrest, from which he escaped while under military guard. After fleeing Mexico he traveled to Cuba and then to Russia, where he was detained for illegal entry and returned to Cuba. Mexican agents said he could be deported to Mexico. The escape occurred amid US pressure on Mexico over fentanyl smuggling.
