"Choi's actions at the time are now deemed an attempt to escape an unjust infringement on her bodily integrity and sexual self-determination, the court said in a statement."
"Choi Mal-ja did it!"
"Sixty-one years ago, in a situation where I could understand nothing, the victim became the perpetrator, and my fate was sealed as a criminal."
"For the victims who shared the same fate as mine, I wanted to be a source of hope for them."
A Busan District Court overturned a 1965 conviction and acquitted Choi Mal-ja, now 79, finding her actions constituted justifiable self-defence. In 1964 in Gimhae, a 21-year-old man pinned Choi, forced his tongue into her mouth and at one point blocked her nose. Choi escaped by biting off about 1.5cm (0.6 inches) of his tongue. The original 1965 ruling punished Choi for grievous bodily harm with a suspended sentence while the attacker received a suspended six-month term for trespassing and intimidation but not attempted rape. Supporters and activists celebrated the acquittal.
