"Those strikes, which have killed dozens of people and are widely viewed as a violation of US and international law, have drawn strong criticism from Petro. In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said aid to Colombia would be cut off and threatened that if Petro did not take more steps to combat the drug trafficking in the country, the US would do the task itself, and it won't be done nicely."
"Colombian Interior Minister Armando Benedetti said on Monday that he viewed those remarks as a threat of invasion or military action against Colombia. I can't imagine closing down some hectares [of drug production sites] unless it's in that way, unless it's by invading, he added. The US also announced over the weekend that it had struck a vessel from Colombia on Friday, alleging that it was helmed by a left-wing rebel group involved in the transport of drugs."
Colombia recalled its ambassador to the United States after Ambassador Daniel Garcia-Pena returned to Bogota to meet President Gustavo Petro following disparaging remarks and threats from US President Donald Trump. The dispute centres on US strikes in the Caribbean on vessels alleged to be transporting drugs, mostly from Venezuela, strikes that have killed dozens and been described as violations of law. Colombian officials, including Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, interpreted Trump’s comments as threats of invasion or military action. The US also reported striking a Colombian vessel it alleged was linked to a left-wing rebel group, and Petro said at least one civilian, Alejandro Carranza, was killed.
