China executed four defendants judged responsible for causing six Chinese citizens' deaths and for operating scam and gambling centres based in Myanmar that generated over $4 billion. The Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court announced the executions after appeals were rejected by the Guangdong Provincial High People's Court. Earlier executions for 11 other convicted operators had been announced. The groups established industrial parks in Myanmar's Kokang region and ran gambling, telecom scam, abduction, extortion, forced prostitution, and drug manufacturing and trafficking operations. Authorities describe the crimes as exceptionally heinous and damaging to public safety. Beijing is intensifying a regional crackdown on industrial-scale scam parks across Southeast Asia.
