UN Secretary-General called the absence of African permanent seats on the Security Council indefensible and told the African Union that African nations must have permanent representation. Latin American countries and most Asian states also lack permanent Security Council seats despite large populations. The unequal permanent membership raises questions about legitimacy, global representation, and the need for comprehensive Security Council reform. Political, regional and procedural obstacles complicate expansion of permanent seats. The program features presenter Rishaad Salamat with guests Olukayode Bakare (visiting scholar in international relations and African politics), Mukesh Kapila (former UN humanitarian coordinator in Sudan) and Tim Murithi (senior adviser at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation).
