Can Pakistanis find their European dream in Belarus? DW 09/25/2025
"Day laborer Shan Sohail from Islamabad is very keen on finding a job abroad. When the 30-year-old learned there was a possibility of working in Belarus, he contacted several labor agents in hopes of applying for a job in construction. "I want to go abroad for better income and a better future," he told DW. However, Shan says he still has no idea how to start the process and where to send his job application."
"Lukashenko wants up to 150,000 'specialists' from Pakistan Pakistan, with its population of over 250 million, has suffered years of economic crisis. Statistics indicate that over 30% university graduates are unemployed. And Belarus despite being one of Europe poorest nations needs workers. Its population is under 9 million and shrinking, with hundreds of thousands leaving the country since the 2020 protests against the regime of Alexandar Lukashenko."
A significant labor migration arrangement is unfolding between Belarus and Pakistan, with Belarus seeking large numbers of Pakistani workers for manufacturing, construction and other sectors. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko projected 100,000–150,000 specialists after meeting Pakistan's prime minister, and Pakistan's interior minister later confirmed plans to send thousands. Pakistan faces prolonged economic crisis and high graduate unemployment, while Belarus suffers population decline after mass departures since 2020. Recruitment efforts are already underway on a limited scale. Many potential migrant workers express strong interest but report uncertainty about application procedures and selection mechanisms led by Pakistani authorities.
