""I think the African Union's suspension of Madagascar with respect to the unconstitutional power grab that has taken place speaks to the limited mechanisms that the Pan-African body has at its disposal to ensure that there is some form of accountability or repercussions," Cummings told DW."
The African Union suspended Madagascar's membership after a military coup that ousted President Andry Rajoelina following three weeks of Gen Z-led anti-government protests. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who led the CAPSAT army unit that mutinied and joined protesters, was sworn in as president. A statement noted "the rule of law must prevail over the rule of force" and described the suspension as "grounded in law and dialogue." The suspension places Madagascar alongside Sudan, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon. Analysts criticized the AU protocol as reactionary and said suspensions have become the bloc's primary mechanism to address unconstitutional power grabs.
