"The African Union (AU) suspended Madagascar's membership on Wednesday following a coup to oust President Andry Rajoelina, which came after three weeks of Gen Z-led anti-government protests."
"AU chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf noted that, "the rule of law must prevail over the rule of force," justifying the suspension as "grounded in law and dialogue.""
"The African Union's suspension of Madagascar with respect to the unconstitutional power grab that has taken place speaks to the limited mechanisms that the Pan-African body has at its disposal to ensure that there is some form of accountability or repercussions," Cummings told DW."
Madagascar's membership in the African Union was suspended after a military takeover that ousted President Andry Rajoelina following three weeks of Gen Z-led anti-government protests. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, leader of the elite CAPSAT unit that mutinied and joined protesters, was sworn in as president after the military announced it had taken over the island nation. Madagascar joined a list of African states suspended by the AU after coups, including Sudan, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon. AU leadership emphasized that the rule of law must prevail and described the suspension as grounded in law and dialogue. Analysts criticized the AU protocol as reactionary and noted that suspensions illustrate limited mechanisms available to enforce accountability after unconstitutional power changes.
