Cameroon's opposition rejects Biya's election victory DW 10/27/2025
"An election law that is not consensual is, at the end of the day, a way for the government to create chaos,"
"Our victory is clear. It must be respected."
"We are neither surprised nor shocked by the turn of events we are currently witnessing,"
Paul Biya, 92, has been Cameroon's president for 43 years and began an eighth term after the October 2025 presidential election. The Union pour le Changement 2025 alliance declared Issa Tchiroma Bakary the winner, claiming over 54% of the vote and warning of turmoil if results were not recognized. Cameroon's electoral body ELECAM announced preliminary results showing Biya with 53.66% and Tchiroma Bakary with 35.19%. The Constitutional Council confirmed the official figures. Critics accuse Biya of repressing political and armed opposition and retaining power amid social upheaval, economic disparity, and separatist violence.
