"I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people. That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others."
"It's so easy to play into narratives this week and to get swept up in this whole rivalries and Ryder Cup and whatever it is. All I want to do is go and try and put blue points on the board. I don't care who it's against."
Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy both downplay personal animosity while acknowledging that a Ryder Cup head-to-head matchup at Bethpage would be appealing and entertaining. DeChambeau said he would enjoy facing McIlroy and previously mentioned he might "chirp in [McIlroy's] ear". McIlroy criticized the notion that DeChambeau seeks attention by naming rivals and said he promised European captain Luke Donald to focus comments on the European team. Both players noted that captains choose pairings and order before knowing opponents, so a direct pairing is uncertain. McIlroy emphasized his priority is scoring points for the team regardless of the opponent.
