British factories cut US exports as Trump tariff uncertainty bites
"Tariffs and trade friction in global markets are creating uncertainty and disrupting longstanding customer and supply chains,"
"Many businesses are responding by diversifying exports, adjusting supply chains or scaling back activity to manage rising costs and delays."
"The research shows that UK manufacturers aren't retreating from global trade, they are recalibrating,"
British manufacturers are scaling back exports to the United States because of uncertainty from shifting US tariff policies. Twenty per cent of UK factories have already stopped or reduced exports to the US in response to tariff uncertainty, and a further 16 per cent plan to reduce reliance on the American market, meaning more than a third now view US tariffs as having a negative impact on their business. Many factories rushed shipments into the US in early 2025 to beat potential import levies, illustrating stop-start trade policy. A blanket 10 per cent tariff applies to UK imports, and threats of up to 25 per cent were raised over Greenland tensions before being rowed back after Nato discussions at the World Economic Forum.
