"US efforts to derail Bolsonaro's prosecution which also included sanctioning Brazilian officials and revoking visas failed. On 11 September, Bolsonaro was convicted and sentenced to 27 years in prison by the supreme court. A fortnight later, Trump appeared to extend an olive branch to Lula at the UN general assembly in New York. He seemed like a very nice man, actually, Trump said of his leftwing counterpart after a brief backstage encounter during which the US president claimed there had been excellent chemistry."
Brazil's president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva urged Donald Trump to scrap US tariffs on Brazilian imports and lift sanctions against Brazilian officials during a friendly video call. The US imposed 50% tariffs in August after Trump's campaign to pressure Brazilian authorities over the coup trial of Jair Bolsonaro, and also sanctioned officials and revoked visas. Bolsonaro was convicted on 11 September and sentenced to 27 years. Trump and Lula exchanged phone numbers after a backstage encounter at the UN where Trump noted excellent chemistry. Brazil's finance minister Fernando Haddad joined the half-hour call and described it as positive. Trump posted that he enjoyed the call and said the countries will do well together.
