"I want this country to prosper. I want it to be democratic, where everyone has rights and freedom."
"We must forget the history of centre-grabbing and ballot box capture. Bangladesh had boarded the train of democracy and would soon reach its destination."
Bangladesh conducted a pivotal national election with nearly 127 million registered voters following the 2024 student-led ouster of longtime leader Sheikh Hasina. Voters cast ballots between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition that includes the youth-formed National Citizens Party. The main prime ministerial candidates were BNP's Tarique Rahman and Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman. Polling took place amid tight security with hundreds of thousands of personnel deployed. Many voters described the experience as emotional and empowering and expressed desires for prosperity, rights and freedom. The chief election commissioner reported strong turnout and framed the vote as a democratic breakthrough; a constitutional referendum ran in parallel.
