A manual count of ballots was expected to start almost immediately, with first results potentially announced overnight. More than 127 million people were eligible to vote in the election, the first since Gen Z mass protests toppled longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024."
"Akhtar Ahmed, senior secretary of the Election Commission, told reporters that nearly half the electorate had voted at 36,031 of the 42,651 polling centres by 2 p.m. (0800 GMT), 2 1/2 hours before polls closed. That is more than the entire 42% turnout at the last election in 2024. Several voters in Bangladesh have described to DW their hopes of what the election could bring."
