"Nearly 127 million eligible voters are electing the next prime minister and parliament for a five-year term. Vote counting is under way in Bangladesh, where 127 million eligible voters are electing a new government, 18 months after a student-led movement ended Sheikh Hasina's two-decade rule. Alliances led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) are vying for the most seats in the national assembly."
"In previous elections, unofficial results have typically begun to emerge early the following morning. Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) officials have told local media, however, that the vote count may take longer this time as it will involve both the white parliamentary voting ballot and the pink ballots for the referendum on the July National Charter. There are also more parties and candidates this time."
"The balance shifted decisively in 2008, when the Awami League-led Grand Alliance returned to power in a landslide. Since then, the party has consolidated its dominance. In 2014, with the BNP absent from the contest, Hasina's Awami League again won in a landslide. The party further strengthened its grip in the 2018 election, securing 300 seats, while the BNP was reduced to just seven seats, its weakest performance on record."
Nearly 127 million eligible voters cast ballots to elect a prime minister and parliament for a five-year term. Polls opened at 7:30am and closed at 4:30pm local time. Vote counting is under way, and officials warn counting may take longer because both the white parliamentary ballot and the pink referendum ballot are being tallied and because more parties and candidates are contesting. Alliances led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami are vying for seats. The Awami League has dominated since 2009 after a decisive 2008 victory, winning landslides in 2014 and 2018 while the BNP was reduced to seven seats.
