""This is a racist senator, displaying blatant racism,""
""not worthy of a member of the Australian Senate""
""So if the Parliament won't ban it, I will display this oppressive, radical, non-religious head garb that risks? our national security and the ill-treatment of women on the floor of our parliament so that every Australian knows what's at stake,""
Pauline Hanson entered the Australian Senate wearing a burqa after Parliament denied permission for her bill to outlaw full-face coverings in public. Senate proceedings erupted and were suspended when she refused to remove the garment and would not leave after a motion to suspend her was moved. Muslim senators and leaders across the chamber condemned the act as racist and disgraceful. Hanson has a history of campaigning against Islamic clothing and previously wore a burqa in parliament in 2017 while calling for a national ban. Hanson later posted a Facebook statement framing the action as a protest about national security and women's mistreatment.
