""The waves are massive and I have no life jacket on," Applebee said on Tuesday. "I just kept thinking, 'just keep swimming, just keep swimming.'""
""The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings," Police Inspector James Bradley said."
"Mother Joanne said it was one of 'hardest decisions' she'd ever had to make, asking her eldest to swim for shore and seek help solo"
A 13-year-old boy swam roughly 4 kilometers to shore to raise the alarm after his family got into difficulty on hired kayaks and paddleboards off Quindalup, Western Australia. The family were on vacation near Australia's southwest coast when an inflatable kayak began taking on water and they drifted. The boy wore a life jacket for about two hours before removing it because it slowed him down, then ran to his mother's phone and called police with details of their equipment. A search helicopter later found the mother and two younger children clinging to a paddleboard after drifting approximately 14 kilometers over ten hours. Police praised the boy's determination and courage, and he received medical attention after collapsing from exhaustion.
