AU-EU Summit in Angola: Balancing China and the West DW 11/21/2025
"[Angola] is not only of interest to the world as a supplier of oil and gas, but in recent years, it has also signaled that it wants to diversify its own economy,"
"One of the key priorities of President Joao Lourenco's leadership as acting president of the African Union is infrastructure financing. This is critical,"
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Angola to explore investment opportunities as Germany broadened partnerships after reducing reliance on Russian oil and gas. Angola is an energy giant and logistics hub that has signaled intentions to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment. High-level visits and Angola's 50th independence celebrations drew global leaders, and about 47 heads of state and government will attend the AU-EU Summit in Luanda to deepen cooperation. Infrastructure financing is a top priority for Angola and the African Union, with the Lobito Corridor—a 1,300-kilometer rail link connecting Angola, the DRC and future Zambia—central to regional transport plans.
