Three young women—20-year-old cousins Morena Verdi and Brenda Del Castillo, and 15-year-old Lara Gutierrez—were tortured and murdered and their killings were broadcast live on social media. Their bodies were found buried in a yard in a southern Buenos Aires suburb five days after their disappearance; investigators say the women boarded a van on September 19 believing they were going to an event. Authorities tied the triple femicide to drug gangs, saying the livestream aimed to punish rule-breaking and warn others; the stream was viewed by 45 members. Five suspects have been detained, including one arrested in the Bolivian border city of Villazon, and thousands protested in Buenos Aires calling for justice and greater protection for women.
