Anti-LGBTQ+ former judge Dallin Oaks set to become new head of the Mormons

Russell M. Nelson, 101, the oldest-ever president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a former heart surgeon, died in Salt Lake City. His presidency, beginning in 2018, saw reversals of some anti-LGBTQ+ policies but also enforcement of harsh earlier measures that led thousands to leave the Church; Nelson nonetheless maintained anti-LGBTQ+ views. The Church praised his global ministry, temple construction, and change. Donald Trump lauded Nelson's surgical pioneering and spiritual ministry. Dallin Oaks, 93 and president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is expected to succeed him and praised Nelson's modesty and gentleness.
