Angolan students confront rising tuition alongside acute shortages of school furniture, toilets, teaching materials and meals. The Angolan Student Movement (MEA) says the government under President João Lourenço has neglected young peoples' interests and warns that either the government changes the situation or it will be overthrown. Thousands of students protested in May 2025 and security forces responded with violence, producing arrests and injuries. MEA is collecting signatures and preparing further actions. The 2025-26 school term began with about 10 million students amid persistent crises, and critics blame Education Minister Luisa Maria Alves Grilo for failing to improve conditions.
