Alysa Liu returned to figure skating after a two-year hiatus intending to show creativity, artistry and who she is as a person. She helped lead the United States to gold in the team event and then produced a flawless free skate that vaulted her to the top of the leaderboard and earned the Olympic women's title. The 20-year-old celebrated exuberantly on the ice and on the podium and became the first American woman to win the Olympic crown in the event since 2002. Liu said the stage mattered more than the medal and expressed hope that her visibility will inspire others.
