Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Nov. 7 that a Chinese naval blockade or other action against Taiwan could be grounds for a Japanese military response. Her remarks were stronger than those of predecessors, and she later refused to retract them while saying she would avoid discussing specific scenarios going forward. Takaichi is a longtime supporter of Taiwan, views China as a growing threat and has ordered accelerated plans to boost Japan's military spending. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Japan's position on Taiwan has not changed. China responded with stern warnings and widespread official and media criticism.
