"Good evening! DW's Jonathan Harding here to carry you through the official opening of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Games actually began a couple of days ago, with a brief power outage and, at least according to Norwegian curler Magnus Nedregotten, some "s*** ice". Pair that with "penisgate", ICE protests (more on that later) and the norovirus taking out Finland's women's ice hockey team, it has been quite an eventful start before the opening ceremony to these Olympics."
"To be honest, the build-up to these Games has not been without controversy. Tonight though, there is a whole host to be excited about. Olympic history being made with two cities involved in the ceremony process, Andrea Bocelli singing and of course, getting to know all those athletes and nations competing at the Games. I can't wait to see the Mongolian uniform - it looks so good! DW's Oliver Moody is live on site for this one, so we will get updates from him too."
The 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony begins after the Games started a few days earlier. The Games experienced a brief power outage and reportedly poor ice conditions, with one curler calling it "s*** ice". Additional issues included a scandal dubbed "penisgate", ICE protests, and a norovirus outbreak that sidelined Finland's women's ice hockey team. The ceremony will involve two cities, marking Olympic history, and will include a performance by Andrea Bocelli. Attention is on the athletes, national uniforms such as Mongolia's, live onsite updates, and a busy evening ahead. The ceremony starts at 8pm local time.
