A teacher's viral TikTok has raised concerns about the negative impact of technology on children's literacy. Hannah Maria, a 10th-grade English teacher, attributes declining reading skills to students relying too heavily on AI and technology, experiencing decreased attention spans and overall literacy deficiencies. Recent assessments show a significant drop in reading proficiency among young students, sparking concern among educators and researchers alike. The teacher decided to leave her profession, criticizing the lack of effective interventions to address the issue, which has become increasingly prevalent in today's technology-driven educational environment.
"Technology is directly contributing to the literacy decrease we are seeing in this country right now," huffed Hannah Maria, an outgoing 10th-grade English teacher, in viral TikTok vid, announcing her exit from the profession.
"A lot of these kids don't know how to read because they've had things read to them or they can click a button and have things read out loud to them in seconds," she griped.
"Their attention spans are weaning because everything is high-stimulation and they can just scroll [away from something] in less than a minute. They can't sit still for very long."
"Look at the test scores and the statistics and the literacy results our students are achieving. It's a direct issue rooted in technology use in education."
