Teal Health has introduced an at-home pap smear device approved by the FDA, aimed to alleviate the discomfort associated with traditional screenings. Co-founders Kara Egan and Avnesh Thakor recognized that many women avoid cervical cancer screenings due to discomfort and lack of access. The user-friendly design allows women to take a sample at home, making it accessible and more pleasant. Designed with input from Ideo, the device resembles a tampon, enabling easier use. Teal Health aims to improve cervical cancer screening rates, particularly among the 23% of women who are overdue for their tests.
Egan emphasizes that "It can feel like a very violating experience, but it is also so important," highlighting the discomfort many women experience during traditional pap smears.
Teal Health's FDA-approved product allows women to collect their own samples at home, with Egan noting, "It's just so easy to accidentally skip your appointment."
Teal aims to address healthcare accessibility and comfort, as co-founder Thakor points out the significant issue: "In 2019, 23% of women were overdue for their cervical cancer screening."
Egan and Thakor collaborated with Ideo to create a device that is comfortable and discreet, aiming for a design that feels less invasive and more user-friendly.
