Cate Blanchett says #MeToo got killed very quickly' in Hollywood
"“It got killed very quickly, which I think is interesting. There are a lot of people with platforms who are able to speak up with relative safety and say this has happened to me. And the so-called average woman on the street, person on the street, is saying me too. Why does that get shut down?”"
"“I’m still on film sets and I do the headcount every day. There’s 10 women and there’s 75 men every morning. I love men, but what happens is the jokes become the same. You just have to brace yourself slightly, and I’m used to that, but it just gets boring for everybody when you walk into a homogeneous workplace. I think it has an effect on the work.”"
"“She and 81 other women appeared on the steps of the Palais des Festivals, representing the total number of female directors who had been selected for the Cannes competition lineup, compared with the 1,866 male directors who had been selected over the same period.”"
"“I can remember being on a set not too long ago where the only women were me and the third AC [assistant camera], she said.”"
Cate Blanchett said #MeToo was killed very quickly in Hollywood. She noted that people with platforms can speak up with relative safety, while the average woman’s accounts get shut down. Blanchett described daily headcounts on film sets, saying women are vastly outnumbered by men and that repetitive jokes and a homogeneous workplace become boring and affect the work. She referenced a Cannes red-carpet protest in 2018 that highlighted the gap between female and male directors selected for the competition. Blanchett defended Cannes by saying change would not happen overnight. Julianne Moore said gender numbers improved over the last decade, but recalled sets where only she and one other woman were present around 2016.
